""I guess it was kind of ironic speaking with his agent," Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said Monday. "'Well, if you don't want your starter to get hurt, sign Jarrett. That was before [Saturday].'""
""Just going back to when Josh had him and playing against that, I think he sees things really well," Vrabel said. "I think he's athletic enough to extend, like we talk about a lot of quarterbacks. The accuracy, I think the decision-making - he's really decisive in the games that we went back and watched, and this is even going back to when I was in Tennessee, as well.""
Jarrett Stidham, drafted by the Patriots in the fourth round in 2019, has not thrown a regular-season NFL pass since the end of the 2023 season. Stidham will start the AFC Championship game for the Broncos after Bo Nix suffered a broken ankle in an overtime win against the Bills. Stidham served as a third-string quarterback in 2020 behind Cam Newton and Brian Hoyer. Josh McDaniels previously worked with Stidham, and Las Vegas acquired Stidham in a trade with New England. Patriots personnel evaluated Stidham this offseason while considering backup options, but ultimately chose a different direction.
