If George Kittle can't play, it's Jake Tonges to the 49ers' rescue again
"It was second-and-goal from the 9-yard line Monday night and quarterback Brock Purdy rolled to his right and attempted to squeeze in a pass to tight end Jake Tonges, who had a sliver of space before he went out of bounds in the end zone. Tonges caught the ball but it was ruled incomplete. Upon closer inspection, it appeared Tonges actually caught the ball and managed to drag both toes just before going out of bounds."
"The 49ers didn't challenge the play, and it didn't matter as Purdy hit Christian McCaffrey on the next snap with a 9-yard strike and his fifth touchdown pass in a 48-27 win over the Colts. The problem, coach Kyle Shanahan said, was Purdy had gone to a quick count and he wound up not having enough time to challenge. They told me he scored so I'm sure Jake is upset with me, but it ended up all right anyway, Shanahan said."
Brock Purdy rolled right on second-and-goal and targeted tight end Jake Tonges, who appeared to catch the ball and drag both toes inbounds before stepping out. Officials ruled the play incomplete and the 49ers did not challenge because Purdy went to a quick count, leaving insufficient time to initiate a challenge. On the next snap Purdy threw a 9-yard touchdown to Christian McCaffrey, his fifth, and San Francisco beat the Colts 48-27. Tonges filled in when George Kittle tore a hamstring and later made a 4-yard end-zone snag that helped preserve a path to a No. 1 seed. Kittle is being evaluated for an ankle sprain, which could require Tonges to play a larger role in the final regular-season games as the 49ers pursue home-field advantage.
