"It was second-and-goal from the 9-yard line Monday night and quarterback Brock Purdy rolled to his right and attempted to squeeze in a pass to tight end Jake Tonges, who had a sliver of space before he went out of bounds in the end zone. Tonges caught the ball but it was ruled incomplete. Upon closer inspection, it appeared Tonges actually caught the ball and managed to drag both toes just before going out of bounds. The 49ers didn't challenge the play, and it didn't matter as Purdy hit Christian McCaffrey on the next snap with a 9-yard strike and his fifth touchdown pass in a 48-27 win over the Colts."
"You remember Tonges, the Los Gatos High and Cal product who filled in capably for Kittle when the 49ers' Hall of Fame-bound tight end was lost to a torn hamstring in a 17-13 Week 1 win in Seattle. If the 49ers win out, it will be Tonges' 4-yard end zone snag against the Seahawks with 1:34 remaining that made a No. 1 seed possible. Tonges essentially stole the ball from Riq Woolen in the end zone. 'It seems like a long time ago,' Tonges said last week. 'Almost last year. But it was a great way to start the season, start it off on a high note and wo knows, maybe we'll get another one in the last game. A perfect bookend.'"
Brock Purdy nearly connected with Jake Tonges for a confirmed touchdown after rolling right and fitting a pass into the end zone, but the play was ruled incomplete despite video evidence suggesting Tonges dragged both toes in bounds. The 49ers did not challenge because a quick count left insufficient time. Purdy responded by throwing a touchdown to Christian McCaffrey on the next snap. With George Kittle's ankle being evaluated, Tonges' prior contributions and his Week 1 end-zone grab that helped create No. 1 seed potential increase his offseason importance for the final two regular-season games.
