""It was not hard at all," Shipley said at the time of retiring at 27. "Only because I never saw myself as a football player first. Don't get me wrong, I worked my tail off for football and I loved it but never saw that as my whole identity because I had such a big background in outdoors. Really, with this opportunity I had I was actually pretty excited about moving forward.""
"The former Texas great suffered "severe burns on his body.""
Jordan Shipley, 40, remains hospitalized in Austin in critical condition after a machine he was operating near Burnet caught fire and caused severe burns. Shipley abruptly retired from the NFL in 2012 at age 27 due to persistent concussion issues and chronic knee problems. He transitioned to outdoors television, co-hosting The Bucks of Tecomate and Tecomate Whitetail Nation. Shipley starred at Texas from 2006–2009, setting single-season records in 2009 with 116 receptions and 1,489 yards, finishing with 248 career receptions and 3,191 receiving yards. He had a strong 2010 rookie season with the Cincinnati Bengals before a major knee injury in 2011 ended his NFL progression.
