Falcons Restructure Kirk Cousins' Contract
"Kirk Cousins recently expressed an openness to staying in Atlanta; as the franchise overhauls its staff, it does not appear that will happen. The Falcons restructured Cousins' contract Tuesday, and the move points the high-priced quarterback out of town. The Falcons' redo will drop Cousins' 2026 salary from $35MM to $2.1MM, according to ESPN's Field Yates, who passes along a significant date that will most likely change the QB's address soon."
"As long as Cousins is off the Falcons' roster by March 13, he will only count $10MM in remaining guarantees. This restructure will increase the dead money number - currently at $35MM - for a 2026 release, however. The Falcons entertained trade talks involving Cousins last year, but the team wanted an acquiring club to eat a sizable portion of Cousins' 2025 money."
Falcons restructured Kirk Cousins' contract, reducing his 2026 base from $35 million to $2.1 million while inserting a 2026 trigger and a $67.9 million guarantee for 2027. If Cousins remains on the Falcons' roster on March 13, the $67.9 million guarantee for 2027 will vest; if he is off the roster by that date he will count only $10 million in remaining guarantees. The restructure increases 2026 dead money above the current $35 million figure. The Falcons explored trades last year but received no deal. Cousins started eight games after Michael Penix Jr.'s injury and previously sought a release in early 2025.
