"Deatrich Wise Jr.'s physicality impresses against the Giants, but also nearly gifts them a TD During the Commanders' second preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the only preseason contest in which Washington's starters saw significant playing time, Wise picked up two face mask penalties. It's a trend that has continued into Week 1, with the longtime New England Patriot being flagged on fourth down with the Giants at the goal line."
"It was a debatable call, but thankfully one that only cost Washington three points in the end as the Giants were unable to punch the ball into the end zone. Inexplicably, after going for it from the three-yard line, Brian Daboll elected to kick a field goal after the next set of downs. For Wise, his overall production has been impressive despite the penalty. He and the rest of the Commanders' much-maligned unit have generated pressure early and often on Russell Wilson."
The Washington Commanders opened their 2025 season against the New York Giants at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md. Washington's revamped defensive line entered the year as a major concern despite adding Javon Kinlaw. The team also signed veteran defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr., who was visible for both positive plays and costly penalties. Wise committed preseason face-mask penalties and was flagged in Week 1 for illegal hands to the face on a fourth-and-3 at the goal line. The penalty extended the Giants' drive but ultimately cost Washington only three points as New York failed to score a touchdown. Wise has generated frequent pressure on Russell Wilson and has 34 career sacks.
