Brian Robinson Jr. was traded from the Washington Commanders to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2026 sixth-round pick. The move followed the emergence of Chris Rodriguez Jr. and seventh-round rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt, which altered the Commanders' backfield plans. Robinson shifted from a projected starter to being cast aside and felt blindsided by the change in treatment. Robinson said he intends to maintain the same goals and process despite joining a new team. The 49ers expect Robinson to provide a more physical presence to help keep Christian McCaffrey healthy. General manager Adam Peters prioritized roster decisions and moved on once Robinson was deemed not part of future plans.
"I really couldn't tell you that right now. The last week or two has been a bit unusual, but nothing changes for me. I expect the same goals I set for myself three, four months ago. It stays the same, same process, same everything I expect to do of everything that I was expecting to do for myself this year. I expect to continue that even though I'm in a new home, so nothing should change."
"It seems that trading Robinson had been a possibility for a lot longer than fans thought. The player felt ostracized in recent weeks as the Commanders sent him to the proverbial shadows. His lack of explosive play ability eventually became his undoing, and Washington made the decision to move on without him. This is all part of the business. Peters is a cutthroat roster builder. Once he determined that Robinson wasn't going to be part of his plans, this was only going to end one"
