49ers' Robert Saleh texts Fred Warner: You ain't dead,' and neither is young defense
"You ain't dead. Let's go hang out, grab a cup of coffee."
"Fred is special, Saleh continued. It's unfortunate but it's someone else's time and it's their opportunity and I'm really looking forward to seeing all these guys grow in their roles."
"Everybody should just do their job and don't be that one guy where they make a big play and it was your fault," Davis added. "That's how I'll be thinking. I don't want it to be me."
Fred Warner suffered a right ankle injury that required surgery and is recovering at home while spending time with his toddler son. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh expects Warner to remain present around the locker room despite the injury. The 49ers defense must continue without Warner and without Nick Bosa, who has been out since Sept. 21. Second-year linebacker Tatum Bethune will step in as a starter, and Malik Mustapha will replace Marques Sigle at safety next to Ji'Ayir Brown. Coaches and players stressed the need for clear communication, disciplined assignments, and avoiding individual mistakes that create big plays.
