Wemby returns, to come off bench vs. Grizzlies
""He put in a lot of work and we've seen enough and felt [comfortable] enough to give it a go," Johnson said. "We'll be extremely mindful of this situation as we have been and will continue to be. It's just going to be one of those living-breathing kind of situations that we're going to continue to balance until we don't. And I would guess that won't be [just] this season.""
"Wembanyama suffered the knee injury in a New Year's Eve loss to the New York Knicks while fighting under the basket to secure a rebound in between Karl-Anthony Towns and Jordan Clarkson. Upon landing on the floor, Wembanyama immediately grabbed his left knee and winced in pain as teammate Stephon Castle stepped in to help the 22-year old back to his feet. Wembanyama sat out the rest of the game, and an MRI the following day showed that the center did not sustain any ligament damage to the knee he hyperextended."
Victor Wembanyama will return Tuesday against the Memphis Grizzlies after missing two games with a bone contusion in his left knee. He will come off the bench and play under a minutes restriction as the Spurs carefully manage his workload. The injury occurred on New Year's Eve while contesting a rebound; he hyperextended the knee and left the game. An MRI showed no ligament damage. Wembanyama previously missed 12 games with a calf strain and has missed 14 games overall; he can miss four more before losing postseason award eligibility under the 65-game rule. Coach Mitch Johnson emphasized a cautious, ongoing balancing approach given Wembanyama's youth.
