UCLA's Mick Cronin ejects own player after foul in loss to MSU
"You know, true toughness is how you compete and how you go to work every day. Steve's a good kid, he made a bad decision, but if you want to be a tough guy, you need to do it during the game, for a block-out, for a rebound. So I was thoroughly disappointed -- the guy was defenseless in the air,"
"I know Steve was trying to block the shot, but the game's a 25-point game, you don't do that."
"I guess he upgraded that to a flagrant 2, huh?"
"That's the first time I saw a coach do it, but that sounds like Mick. So he'll get that straightened out."
UCLA lost 82-59 to No. 15 Michigan State, marking the Bruins' second straight 20-plus-point defeat. With UCLA trailing 77-50 and 4:26 remaining, center Steven Jamerson II was called for a flagrant foul after fouling Carson Cooper from behind on a dunk attempt, and coach Mick Cronin sent Jamerson to the locker room. Cronin said Jamerson made a bad decision, emphasized that true toughness is shown by competing and boxing out, and criticized the hit on a defenseless player late in a lopsided game. Tom Izzo reacted with a joking remark about the rare coach ejection. UCLA's consecutive 20-plus defeats were the first since 1944-45; the Bruins entered the weekend having won five of six and held a 17-9 overall, 9-6 conference record.
