Washington acquired Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert after Young listed the Wizards as his preferred landing spot. Young's relationship with Atlanta deteriorated after failed attempts to secure a long-term contract, making a trade likely. The Wizards monitored Young's situation and moved quickly to address a roster weakness at guard. Young favored Washington partly to reunite with Travis Schlenk, the Wizards senior vice president of player personnel who originally drafted Young in 2018 and who provided a sense of comfort for a fresh start.
