Tibbetts: Ejection in closeout G4 'weak,' unmerited
""I think it was one of the weakest double technicals ever," Tibbetts said. "I didn't even know I got the second one, to be completely honest. I just don't understand it.""
""It's weak, weak, weak," Tibbetts said. "We were playing for our playoff lives. Most coaches, when they get tossed, you're doing it on purpose. That wasn't my intention at all. ... I didn't feel like I deserved it at all. ... It was bulls---.""
"Gulbeyan said Bonner's was given because of a "heat-of-the-moment reaction, including protesting a no-call and overtly air-punching at an official.""
With 2:41 left in the third quarter of Game 4 of the WNBA Finals, Phoenix coach Nate Tibbetts received two quick technical fouls for arguing a foul call and became the first head coach ever ejected in a Finals game. Crew chief Roy Gulbeyan said Tibbetts earned the first technical for saying "That's f---ing terrible," then stepped closer and repeated the phrase, drawing an automatic second technical. Tibbetts called the double ejection "weak" and denied intending to be tossed. Mercury players Kahleah Copper and DeWanna Bonner were assessed technicals later; Gulbeyan described Bonner's as a heat-of-the-moment reaction and said Copper aggressively approached an official and yelled a profanity. Tibbetts also pointed to a free-throw disparity, with Phoenix attempting 18 free throws versus Las Vegas's 31.
