St. John's shows similar traits to last season during comeback victory over Towson
"A start of a new season in Queens has brought new players and new uniforms to St. John's but the product on the court was very similar from a season ago. The Johnnies were sluggish and cold offensively to start its exhibition slate against Towson before turning up the defensive pressure and getting timely buckets after halftime, turning an 8-point deficit into a 10-point win, 73-63."
"A 13-0 run catapulted the Johnnies into a lead it would not relinquish midway through the second half, headlined by veteran Sadiku Ibine Ayo and transfers Dillon Mitchell and Oziyah Sellers. "We're going to play much better than this, but for a first game out I was very pleased." Many of the Red Storm projected standouts struggled, specifically Zuby Ejiofor who was just 2-for-10 from the floor with nine points and six rebounds."
St. John's started the season visibly new but produced similar on-court results to last year. The Johnnies began sluggish and shot 32.3% in the first half, falling behind by eight against Towson. Increased defensive pressure and improved offense in the second half produced a 13-0 run and a 50% second-half shooting clip. St. John's turned the deficit into a 73-63 victory. Bryce Hopkins scored 13 points off the bench and Dillon Mitchell contributed across the stat sheet. Zuby Ejiofor struggled, shooting 2-for-10 and spending time on the bench. The team faces Michigan next in its final exhibition.
