Jeremy Fears started for No. 10 Michigan State against No. 5 Illinois amid debate over disciplining him for recent sportsmanship incidents. Fears swung his leg into Langston Reynolds' groin after a whistle at Minnesota and received a technical on review; he also appeared to place a forearm on an opponent's neck and to trip Michigan's Yaxel Lendeborg in a prior game. Coach Tom Izzo said he doesn't condone the actions, called for Fears to mature and considered benching him. Fears leads the nation with 204 assists, averages nearly 15 points per game, and has a history of a shooting-related leg injury and recovery.
