"I'm on straight effort. I'm just talking straight effort. I'm not even getting to the basketball side of things, like ... mistakes are a part of the game, but the effort to me for a team that wants to play for a championship, it's unacceptable."
"It's not something that you want to do, but I think if the players don't show any effort, at some point, no matter how talented we are as a team, if you don't have that, you just can't be a winning team."
"I handle all my conversations with ourselves in house," Finch said. "Disappointing [Gobert] felt the need to go outside. Nonetheless, that's been addressed already today. There's never been a team that's won anything meaningful that substituted their way there."
Rudy Gobert criticized the Timberwolves' effort after a 119-115 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans in which a lead of as much as 18 points disappeared. Gobert emphasized accountability, said effort is unacceptable for a championship-caliber team, and suggested coaches may need to bench players who do not compete. Gobert finished with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Head coach Chris Finch said the concern was addressed internally, defended the team's accountability, and expressed disappointment Gobert spoke publicly. The loss dropped Minnesota to 32-21, tied with Phoenix for the Western Conference's sixth seed.
