"David was a hero to me,"
"He's one of the all-time greats in Verbum Dei history."
David Greenwood, one of the best high school basketball players in Southern California history, will have his jersey retired Friday night at Verbum Dei during halftime of the Gardena Serra game. Greenwood died June 8 at age 68 after a bout with cancer. He teamed with Roy Hamilton to form a dominant Verbum Dei squad in the 1970s, became an All‑American at UCLA and played 12 years in the NBA after being the No. 2 pick in the 1979 draft. Greenwood won an NBA championship with the Detroit Pistons and later returned to coach Verbum Dei to state championships in 1998 and 1999.
