St. John's improved to 21-5 and 14-1 in the Big East, moving a half-game ahead of UConn after Creighton upset UConn. Nigel James Jr. scored 25 points and Royce Parham had 13 for Marquette. St. John's led 44-35 at halftime after shooting 54.8% and closed the first half on a 10-4 run. Marquette opened the second half with an 11-0 run to take a brief lead, but St. John's retook control and held off a late Marquette surge.
