"Just 26 seconds into UCLA 's game against Pepperdine on Friday night, Bruins forward Tyler Bilodeau committed a needless foul. It was enough to make Bilodeau's coach go to his bench, Cronin subbing in Brandon Williams for Bilodeau, who remained on the bench for more than five minutes. It was a decision that seemed to send its intended message. After a sloppy start, the No. 12 Bruins turned up the intensity, exerted some defensive pressure"
"Xavier Booker scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures for the Bruins, pleasing a far larger, more energetic crowd than they hosted in their flat-all-the-way-around opener. Booker was a menace on both sides of the court, grabbing five rebounds, blocking five shots and even throwing a nifty pass to a cutting Jamar Brown for a layup. UCLA's Donovan Dent added a relatively quiet 12 points and four assists and was joined in double figures scoring by Skyy Clark"

UCLA recovered from a sloppy start by increasing defensive intensity, forcing a run and holding Pepperdine to 34.4% shooting. The Bruins produced a 74-63 victory at Pauley Pavilion. Xavier Booker led with 15 points, five rebounds and five blocks and assisted on a Jamar Brown layup. Donovan Dent added 12 points and four assists; Skyy Clark scored 11 and Eric Dailey Jr. finished with 10 in his season debut after a knee injury. A 15-0 run was sparked largely by UCLA defense.
