How the extended WNBA CBA negotiations negatively impact the Tempo
"For an inaugural team with so much unknown, waiting on the CBA only makes it worse. There's only so much the Toronto Tempo can unveil before its time to get to the root of the matter: the players. Unfortunately for this new expansion franchise, the Tempo can't make any moves in that direction until the new collective bargaining agreement is solved."
"Players have been vocal and persistent about their requests for the new deal, stating that they want the new payment structure to include league revenue sharing like the NBA's deal does. They also want a salary cap that grows as the league grows - especially because of the rate at which the league is currently expanding - and is determined by measures of basketball related income each season."
The Toronto Tempo cannot build a roster or make personnel moves until the WNBA finalizes a new collective bargaining agreement. The existing CBA was set to expire Oct. 31, 2025, but negotiations extended it twice, now to Jan. 9. Players seek revenue sharing, a growth-linked salary cap tied to basketball-related income, housing benefit revisions, individual salary limits, facility standards, mandated charter flights, and expanded retirement benefits. The delay immediately affects the Tempo by postponing the expansion draft, pushing back the season schedule, and creating uncertainty around free agency and player acquisition for the inaugural roster.
