"Doug Moe, who won an ABA title with the Oakland Oaks as a player and later gained fame over a rumpled, irreverent and sometimes R-rated decade as coach of the Denver Nuggets in the 1980s, died Tuesday. He was 87. Moe's son, David, notified several of the coach's friends that his father had died after a long bout with cancer, Ron Zappolo, a longtime Denver TV personality and good friend of Moe's, told The Associated Press."
Doug Moe won an ABA title with the Oakland Oaks as a player and later coached in the NBA for 15 seasons, compiling a 628-529 record. He led the Denver Nuggets to one of their most exciting decades, including a run to the 1985 Western Conference finals and earned NBA Coach of the Year honors in 1988. Moe's teams led the league in scoring for five consecutive seasons with a motion offense that rarely used set plays. He was known for a rumpled appearance, irreverent and often R-rated language on the bench, and an animated, sideline presence.
