"Entering the season, the Washington Wizards had all eyes on them as a potential sleeper in the Eastern Conference. Not only due to the abundance of offseason moves from general manager Will Dawkins, but because the team possessed a Rookie of the Year candidate with the chance to make an immediate impact througout his first seaon on the team."
"Johnson looked like a smooth operator, a player with extreme confidence in his abilities and the craftiness to get to his spots at will."
""He's [Tre Johnson] good, he's talented, he can shoot it," Mitchell said when asked about Johnson. "Didn't really feel like he was a rookie out there. Just kinda felt like someone who could get to his spots.""
The Washington Wizards entered the season viewed as a potential Eastern Conference sleeper after numerous offseason moves by general manager Will Dawkins. The roster includes Tre Johnson, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and an early Rookie of the Year candidate. Johnson impressed at the NBA Combine and Summer League with confident, crafty scoring and the ability to get to his spots. Early regular-season play has produced flashes of that skill but inconsistent production compared with college and Summer League. The step up in talent partly explains the struggles and has caused fan frustration as passed-over prospects like Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen emerge. Donovan Mitchell praised Johnson’s talent and shooting and said Johnson did not look like a rookie.
