NCAA President Charlie Baker expressed support for expanding the NCAA Tournament by 4 to 8 teams during Big 12 spring meetings. Emphasizing the need for a decision due to logistical complexities, Baker pointed out ongoing conversations with CBS and WBD regarding this potential change. He acknowledged flaws in the current 64-68 team structure, asserting that it prevents deserving teams from participating. By increasing the number of teams, he believes it would allow more deserving schools to compete for a place in the tournament, enhancing overall fairness.
We've had good conversations with CBS and WBD. Our goal here is to try to sort of get to either yes or no sometime in the next few months because there's a lot of logistical work that would be associated with doing this.
The point behind going from 68 to 72 or 76 is to basically give some of those schools that were probably among the 72, 76, 68, 64 best teams in the country a way into the tournament.
