Windsurf, a coding startup, faces operational challenges following Anthropic's sudden reduction of access to its Claude AI models. CEO Varun Mohan expressed disappointment over the lack of notice regarding this decision, which leaves Windsurf scrambling for alternative third-party compute providers. The company had been relying on Anthropic's models due to their popularity, but with limited capacity, Windsurf users may experience short-term availability issues. This situation arises shortly after Anthropic prioritized access to its new AI model Claude 4 for other popular coding applications, further complicating Windsurf's position in the market.
With less than five days of notice, Anthropic decided to cut off nearly all of our first-party capacity to all Claude 3.x models. Given the short notice, we may see some short-term Claude 3.x model availability issues as we have very quickly ramped up capacity on other inference providers.
We have been very clear to Anthropic that this is not our desire - we wanted to pay them for the full capacity. We are disappointed by this decision and short notice.
