Five public pools in Newark, NJ, now feature vibrant custom-designed cabanas created by NJIT design-build students, enhancing public recreational spaces. This initiative, a result of a collaborative 15-week project involving around 170 students and a partnership between NJIT, Newark’s recreation department, and Prologis, aims to improve the amenities at these pools. The project addresses a crucial need for functional communal areas amid stark concrete environments. The innovative designs were the outcome of intense coursework, with the students transforming initial concepts into tangible, engaging spaces for the community.
The project, directed by NJIT's Mark Bess, was initiated to enhance Newark's public pool offerings, transforming them from mere concrete platforms to vibrant communal spaces.
Donnell Redding highlighted the significance of public-private partnerships, stating, 'Cities don't often have the budget for state-of-the-art amenities like this, making our collaboration essential.'
