Codeium, maker of the AI coding tool Windsurf, is reportedly in negotiations for a $3 billion acquisition by OpenAI. This move could create competition amongst existing AI coding assistants, like Cursor, which OpenAI previously supported financially. Concerns are raised regarding the credibility of the OpenAI Startup Fund, given its investment in Cursor. Recent developments hint at activity between the firms, including communications to Windsurf users and praise from OpenAI's product chief. Codeium has achieved considerable early revenue success, although less than that of its competitor, Cursor.
In addition to what sources told Bloomberg, there are a few more clues that something is going on between the two companies.
OpenAI chief product officer Kevin Weil also released a video yesterday praising Windsurf's capabilities.
