Newark airport finishes runway project early. Flight limits to lift soon
Briefly

A construction project at Newark Liberty International Airport was completed nearly two weeks ahead of schedule, allowing the FAA to anticipate increasing flight limits soon. Despite ongoing shortages of air traffic controllers due to various staff issues, the runway is set to be used for departures immediately but won’t accept arrivals until testing is completed. The runway upgrade aims to alleviate delays and cancellations experienced this spring, partially attributed to controller shortages caused by technical problems and medical leaves of several staff members.
Crews worked day and night to complete the $121 million construction project 13 days ahead of schedule and ease some of the problems at the airport.
The FAA limited the Newark airport to 28 arrivals and 28 departures an hour last month because of the construction and staff shortages.
