The FDNY has embraced cutting-edge technology to enhance firefighting strategies, showcasing robotic units that include drones and robotic canines during a recent training session. This three-day event, aimed at local firefighting units, emphasized the capabilities of these mechanized tools in hazardous situations, particularly for responding to dangerous materials like lithium battery fires. Capt. Michael Leo highlighted how these innovations allow firefighters to operate with increased effectiveness and safety in crisis scenarios, with training culminating in a stair climb challenge between firefighters and a robotic dog.
"They're very, very robust. These were used in the parking garage collapse downtown. But where they excel is hazardous material situations, like lithium battery fires that we're coming across more frequently."
"We still have a firefighter going up whose responsible for, you know, seeing what's going on on the roof. But now we're also 200 feet above the fire, viewing the entire roof and we have thermal imaging of what's happening at the roof skin."
