During the Democratic primary debate, Comptroller Scott Stringer highlighted the importance of realistic housing goals, challenging opponents' ambitious plans. Stringer proposes a focus on 20,000 affordable housing units over the next five years, utilizing public land and investing in minority- and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs). His initiative, known as ROOF, aims to create 18,400 family-sized units and preserve 24,000 more. This reflects his longstanding commitment to alleviating housing issues in New York City while advocating for the underprivileged and striving for a balanced real estate ecosystem.
We need to build what I call aspirational housing. When I was comptroller, I audited the number of vacant parcels of land the city owns, and I believe that that's the land that can build the next generation of affordable housing.
Stringer advised that a shorter horizon is more realistic. His housing plan calls for building 20,000 units over five years, focusing on affordable housing on public land.
