Subletter to get 120,000 kronor back for overpriced Stockholm rental
"The Svea Court of Appeal ruled that a subletter in Stockholm is to receive over 120,000 kronor due to excessive rent payments that exceeded legal limits."
"In Sweden, subletters cannot charge more than their own rent plus a maximum of 15 percent for furnishings; the Stockholm case revealed widespread noncompliance."
A subletter in Stockholm's Ostermalm area has won a ruling from the Svea Court of Appeal to receive over 120,000 kronor after paying excessive rent. The monthly rent of 18,500 kronor for a 57 square meter furnished apartment was deemed illegal, as reasonable rent should have been 9,950 kronor. Swedish law prohibits subletters from charging more than their own rent and limited additional costs. Many landlords disregard these regulations, and tenants can reclaim excess payments retroactively by applying to the Rent and Tenancy Tribunal.
