The Riverie, a new dual-tower apartment complex in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, will be the largest all-geothermal-powered building in New York State, designed by Lendlease. Set to be completed next year, it will feature a closed-loop geoexchange system that taps into the Earth's temperature for heating and cooling its 834 apartments. Although exact savings on utility bills remain uncertain, the developers anticipate lower costs compared to traditional buildings. Additionally, 30% of units will be affordable housing, with one-bedroom rentals starting at $1,639.
We believe the overall utility cost for the building as a whole will be less than in a typical building... a more efficient system uses less electricity in theory.
There is nothing we can use as a reference for cost-savings analysis... ultimately, it behaves very efficiently.
Thirty percent of the units have been set aside for affordable housing, with those one-bedrooms set to start at $1,639 a month.
The geothermal process mostly happens underground and won't generate any unwanted noise for residents or neighbors.
