The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission has designated the interiors of Marcel Breuer's former Whitney Museum building as a landmark. This designation protects its lobby, coat check, gift shop, and other key areas from alteration during renovations led by Herzog & de Meuron for Sotheby's, who purchased the building in 2023 for $100 million. The building, completed in 1966, symbolizes Brutalist architecture in the U.S. and reflects NYC's architectural innovation. Although the galleries are not protected in this designation, they will be repurposed for public exhibition and auction purposes.
The vote to approve landmark designation on 20 May will protect the building's lobby, coat check, gift shop, cafe and other public-facing areas.
The former Whitney building and its unique interior are remarkable examples of the Brutalist style of modern architecture and showcase New York's innovative design.
