""This is a very important community program," said Emily Chase, assistant commissioner for public programs at NYC Parks, at a kickoff event Thursday. "It's a great place to meet people and be part of an amazing, diverse New York City community.""
"Although lap swim is returning, it’s in a limited capacity due to a shortage of lifeguards. The city has 680 certified guards, but that’s still less than half of the 1,400 employed in 2019."
Adult lap swim sessions in New York City will resume starting July 7, 2023, after a five-year pause due to the pandemic. Limited to five pools across boroughs, the program will run on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. The relaunch is part of a broader initiative to support community fitness, despite ongoing lifeguard shortages. Participants can register for free and may earn rewards for swimming, fostering local engagement and health awareness.
