The New York City Council is poised to vote on a rezoning plan that could allow for the construction of approximately 4,600 new homes along Atlantic Avenue and nearby blocks in Brooklyn. With 40% of the new units designated as affordable, this initiative is part of Mayor Eric Adams' efforts to address the city's housing crisis. The comprehensive plan also includes $215 million in investments for community infrastructure, protections for tenants and homeowners, and various upgrades, alongside a recent advocacy victory for Central Brooklyn residents.
"The rezoning single-handedly produces more affordable housing units than have been built over the entire previous decade in the area," the Council said in a release Tuesday.
"After more than a decade of advocacy, Central Brooklyn is finally getting the community-led rezoning it has demanded," Councilmember Crystal Hudson, who represents the area, said in a statement earlier this month.
