During a debate, Andrew Cuomo challenged Zohran Mamdani on his stance about Israel's existence as a Jewish state. Mamdani expressed his belief in Israel's right to exist but emphasized the importance of equal rights within that existence. Cuomo pointed out Mamdani's refusal to acknowledge Israel as a Jewish state explicitly. Mamdani, in his defense, stated that he answers questions directly and supports a vision of states that uphold equal rights for all citizens.
"I believe Israel has a right to exist," Mamdani said to which the moderator replied, 'As a Jewish state?" "As a state with equal rights," he said.
Cuomo, as well as Whitney Tilson, quickly cut in on the remark, with Cuomo pointing out Mamdani declined to say the nation should exist as a Jewish state.
"Unlike you, I answer questions very directly," Mamdani told Cuomo, "and I want to be very clear I believe every state should be a state of equal rights."
