Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, who recently won the primary over former Governor Andrew Cuomo, defended himself against President Trump's accusations of communism. In a "Meet the Press" interview, he stated that Trump aims to distract from his political agenda focused on working-class empowerment. Additionally, Mamdani clarified his political stance as a democratic socialist, contrasting it with communism, and emphasized his commitment to maintaining New York as a sanctuary city, arguing for its long-standing safety benefits.
He wants to distract from what I'm fighting for. I'm fighting for the very working people he ran a campaign to empower that he has since then betrayed.
Mamdani is not a communist. He is a democratic socialist. A communist believes in collective ownership of all property and the end of capitalism.
Ultimately, we've seen that this is a policy that has kept New Yorkers safe for decades. It's a policy that had previously been defended by Democrats and Republicans alike.
When asked to respond to Trump's assertions that he is a communist, Mamdani explained that he's had to get used to the president attacking his identity.
