Baraka and New Jersey Democratic representatives were present for a protest against the facility's reopening when they confronted DHS agents. Baraka, accused of attempting to access the site unlawfully, asserted he had complied with security and claimed nobody instructed him to leave. After his release, he criticized the narrative surrounding his arrest, while authorities defended the actions taken against him as necessary due to his trespass.
During an interview with CNN's Kaitlan Collins on Friday night, Baraka asserted he had done nothing wrong, noting, "I was there for over an hour... Nobody told me to leave."
Interim US Attorney Alina Habba defended the arrest, stating, "The mayor chose to disregard lawful orders," while Baraka refuted, claiming, "That is not the context of what happened."
