Public Advocate Jumaane Williams made an unannounced visit to Rikers Island due to reports of overcrowding and controversial housing changes at the Rose Singer Center. Williams expressed concerns about male inmates being placed in a facility previously reserved for women. During a subsequent press conference, he encountered a confrontational response from Benny Boscio, president of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association, who accused Williams of neglecting their interests. This clash highlighted tensions surrounding the handling of Rikers' ongoing issues amid efforts to reduce its population and implement reforms.
What we're seeing here, in my opinion, is not everybody moving in the same direction to actually close Rikers and lessen the population.
I have never seen you come in front of this sign strictly for us never! You only come in front of this sign when it's in your interest.
