Following alarming incidents where horses ran loose in Central Park, there are increasing calls to terminate New York City's horse carriage industry. On Memorial Day, two horses escaped their drivers, creating chaos among pedestrians. The union representing carriage drivers explains that one horse, Shadow, lost its headpiece due to eating, causing it to flee. A second horse followed, resulting in an injury to a driver attempting to manage the situation. Supporters of horse use in the city argue for modifications to prevent future occurrences, while animal rights advocates continue to push for a complete ban.
“When they were running, the driver followed him, tried to grab him, but he knocked the driver down,” Gassambe said. “The driver fell down ... and then the horse keep going.”
“It was crazy. A lot of people were screaming. People that were scared for their lives,” Dapsota said.
The union said in that incident, which happened on May 18, the horse's bridle also came off while it was eating.
A second driver ran to help, and that driver's horse followed Shadow, the union says. The second driver broke his wrist catching his horse and needed surgery.
