Universal School Streets Will Be a Heavy Lift for Mamdani: Advocates - Streetsblog New York City
"I want to implement universal school streets,"
"That means closing off the roadway to vehicle traffic in front of every single school building in the city [and] flipping the city's current approach that requires schools to opt-in."
"It would be a mistake to say every school [should have a] school street,"
"I have people in my office right now on the phone with a school and they are just hearing about how much the teachers and staff want their parking spaces."
Mayor Mamdani proposed universal school streets that would close vehicle traffic in front of every school and flip from an opt-in to an opt-out model. Implementing universal school streets at scale would likely create more than 1,000 new school streets in New York City, far more than the current fewer than 70. Open Plans recommended new policies, reduced paperwork, and a dedicated annual budget to enable widespread adoption and strategies to persuade school staff accustomed to parking near buildings. Street Lab leadership cautioned that universal rollout could face significant pushback from educators and staff seeking parking. City Hall did not comment on plans.
