"The device thrown near the New York City mayor's residence at a protest on Saturday was an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death, the NYPD confirmed on Sunday. Further analysis will be conducted, including on a second device, the NYPD Bomb Squad said."
"What followed was even more disturbing. Violence at a protest is never acceptable. The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are."
"Our officers ran toward danger without hesitation, demonstrating once again the courage and dedication it takes to protect this city every single day."
During a Saturday protest near the NYC mayor's residence, chaos erupted between opposing groups: approximately 20 demonstrators participating in a "Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City" protest led by far-right activist Jake Lang, and roughly 120 counterprotesters rallying to "Run the Nazis Out of New York." An improvised explosive device was thrown near East End Avenue and East 87th Street, with one device extinguishing itself near police officers and a second device dropped by a counterprotester. Two people were arrested at the scene. Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the protest as rooted in bigotry and racism, calling the violence criminal and reprehensible. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised officers for their quick response to the dangerous situation.
