Trump's Proposed Budget Would be 'Disastrous' for NYC Housing Agencies
Briefly

Trump's proposed federal budget threatens to cut NYC's housing programs by 42%, impacting low-income residents and NYCHA tenants severely. The proposed $2.7 billion cut from $6.3 billion in funding would eliminate major housing initiatives, such as Section 8 vouchers and public housing support, affecting over 350,000 households. NYCHA CFO Annika Lescott-Martinez described the potential cuts as disastrous, while NYC Department of Social Services Commissioner Molly Waslow Park emphasized that such cuts would compromise all services. This proposed shift to a State Rental Block Grant comes with a drastic reduction in available funds, challenging already vulnerable communities.
"I can tell you that a 43 percent cut for any agency would be disastrous," said New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) CFO Annika Lescott-Martinez.
"I don't see a world where we take a 43 percent cut and it doesn't affect all of our services," said Molly Waslow Park, commissioner of the NYC Department of Social Services.
"The devil of that is in the details," said Furman Center Director Matthew Murphy.
The budget proposal would eliminate funding for some of the city's largest housing programs.
