NYPD Chief of Department John Chell announced significant reductions in crime, with record-low shootings and homicides reported in 2025. Despite being understaffed, strategic deployments and the confiscation of over 22,000 guns have positively impacted public safety. Mayor Eric Adams and Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that May recorded the least number of homicides since 2017, emphasizing ongoing efforts in safety zones and intelligence-gathering operations to maintain this downward trend in violence. Chell remains optimistic about continuing improvements in safety over the summer.
It's really been a cumulative two and a half-year run now, with shooting violence and homicides going down. Obviously, it comes down to deployment and strategy, but at the end of the day, to make it real simple: you take this amount of guns off the streets, fewer people get shot.
Since the beginning of my term, approximately 22,016 guns have been confiscated, with 2,200 being taken off the streets just this year. This has resulted in a drastic drop in crime.
