Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City, demonstrates an interest in foreign policy through extensive international travel and diplomacy. His engagements include meetings with foreign leaders at events such as the World Cup and trips to countries such as Israel, Mexico, and Turkey. Adams believes that understanding global issues is vital for a mayor; he emphasizes that mayors must address larger problems beyond their localities. His travels aim at discussing critical issues like technology, antisemitism, and migration, advocating for a greater role of local leaders in global discussions.
"If you are a mayor that only stands on your block, you are not going to solve the problems of the globe," he said to reporters in 2022.
"You cannot be a global changer if you are a domestic traveler," he said in an interview with the pro-government Turkish newspaper The Daily Sabah in 2015.
"Here's where I have been, I have been to Lebanon, I have been to Jordan, I have been to Egypt, I have been to Dubai..." he stated at an Arab heritage event.
While in Turkey, Adams praised the country's humanitarian response to increased migration, suggesting the US should emulate their approach.
