Socialist Zohran Mamdani cuts into Andrew Cuomo's big lead in NYC mayor race - but ex-gov still projected winner: poll
Briefly

A recent Siena College/AARP poll indicates that former Governor Andrew Cuomo is leading the Democratic primary for New York City mayor against State Representative Zohran Mamdani. Cuomo has 34% support compared to Mamdani's 16%. The ranked-choice voting projection shows Cuomo defeating Mamdani 64% to 36%. However, with 20% of Democrats undecided, the race may shift leading up to the primary on June 24. Other candidates like Brad Lander, Scott Stringer, and Adrienne Adams have minimal support, and Cuomo faces challenges such as not qualifying for public matching funds due to administrative errors.
"Former Governor Andrew Cuomo is the clear early leader in the Democratic primary with State Representative Zohran Mamdani a distant second," Siena College Research Institute director Don Levy said.
"But one of five voters haven't yet decided on even a first vote in the ranked choice voting system," the pollster noted.
A projection of the ranked-choice voting showed Cuomo ultimately defeating Mamdani, a Queens assemblyman, 64% to 36% in the ninth round.
Cuomo wouldn't break 50% until the eighth round, after Speaker Adams and Stringer were eliminated, the poll found.
