In Sheepshead Bay, neighbors are vehemently opposing the city's plan to establish a homeless shelter for families at 2134 Coyle Street, following the annulment of an earlier affordable housing project. Protests began in March and have attracted a wide array of activists, including local politicians and everyday citizens. Demonstrations intensified, with participants even camping at the site to halt construction, leading to some arrests. Accusations of a "bait and switch" have emerged, as residents claim they were unaware of the shelter proposal until recently, causing political leaders to demand the shelter's cancellation.
"At no time was a shelter proposed or presented to the community board or the City Council prior to the vote on approval for this project," Vernikov said.
"Bait and switch" accusations are rampant as the property, once slated for affordable housing, was changed to a homeless shelter without proper community input.
