Sen. Chuck Schumer suggested that recent budget cuts to the Coast Guard might be a contributing factor to the deadly collision between the Mexican Navy tall ship Cuauhtemoc and the Brooklyn Bridge. The tragic crash claimed the lives of two cadets and injured 17. Schumer pointed out 'underreported' staffing changes and safety concerns, indicating that such issues could pose national risks. In response, the Coast Guard asserted that they promptly deployed a crew to secure the scene, emphasizing their commitment to safety amid the incident's fallout.
"The crash into the bridge reveals potential weak points in USCG safety and communications that could span to national impact," Schumer said in a release Sunday.
According to sources, the Cuauhtémoc lost steering due to mechanical failure, which raises important questions regarding the vessel’s prior operational conditions.
