A recent report from the Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law at NYU highlights significant racial disparities in parole decisions in New York State, showing that individuals of color are 33% less likely to be released on parole compared to white counterparts. This analysis, which covers data from 2022 to March 2025, indicates a troubling trend that has persisted and even worsened over the past six months, despite ongoing scrutiny. Governor Hochul's tenure has coincided with these disparities, raising questions about the influence of the independent parole board, primarily composed of law enforcement nominees, on these decisions.
Despite all of the increased scrutiny of these racial disparities in parole release decisions, the last six months show that these egregious racial disparities have remained, and even slightly worsened.
There's no rational explanation for that disparity.
Not coincidentally, this three-and-a-quarter-year period coincides with Governor Hochul's time in office.
Many of the current group of members come from a law enforcement background, and all but four have expired terms - yet still sit on the board.
