Advocates in Canarsie held a rally, reiterating demands for ferry service after years of advocacy for transportation equity in their area. Jibreel Jalloh, rally organizer, highlighted the long struggle for a ferry, while Councilmember Mercedes Narcisse announced her plan to introduce legislation to ensure a public ferry stop at Canarsie Pier. The project is deemed essential not just for Canarsie, but also benefiting neighboring communities by improving access to jobs, schools, and reducing travel times, confronting local transportation challenges head-on.
"We are saying enough is enough; we're gathering here today, after eight years and two mayors, asking for a ferry," said Jibreel Jalloh, rally organizer and Executive Director of The Flossy Organization (TFO).
"We're not going to be the forgotten district ... this isn't a luxury, it is a lifeline," said Councilmember Mercedes Narcisse, emphasizing the importance of a ferry for Canarsie.
Narcisse announced she would introduce legislation to require the City to establish a public ferry stop at Canarsie Pier, for the benefit of surrounding neighborhoods.
