Mayor Eric Adams has introduced the new NYPD Quality of Life Division in response to growing concerns among residents in New York City. The initiative aims to tackle everyday quality-of-life issues, such as noise, illegal parking, and homelessness. The program will initiate a pilot project involving Q-Teams, specialized officers trained to resolve these issues while enhancing community relations. The approach is focused on data-driven strategies similar to CompStat, emphasizing collaboration between police and community members to improve neighborhood livability without reverting to past policing tactics.
New Yorkers don't want to live with excessive noise, illegal parking, homelessness-related issues, outdoor drug use, aggressive panhandling, and all the other issues that have risen steadily across the five boroughs over the last six years.
The Quality of Life Division will begin operations with a pilot program in five precincts and one housing Police Service Area, made up of officers who have already forged relationships with their communities.
