Offsides at City Hall? MTA boss says he wasn't approached about Mamdani's reported World Cup fare free bus pilot pitch | amNewYork
"Honestly, I haven't been asked that by anybody. We're not going to study things that are not on the agenda of the city and the state and other power players."
"Nobody's asked me to give free buses to people who are paying $1,000 a ticket from other countries."
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber testified before the City Council that he has not been approached by city or state officials regarding Mayor Zohran Mamdani's reported proposal for a fare-free bus pilot program during the FIFA World Cup this summer. The five-week soccer championship is expected to attract 1.2 million visitors to the New York and New Jersey region. Lieber dismissed the idea, suggesting it would subsidize transit for wealthy tourists rather than financially struggling New Yorkers. He stated the MTA would not study proposals not on the agenda of city and state leadership. The proposal reportedly originated from Mamdani's administration pitching the plan to Governor Kathy Hochul, who oversees the state-run MTA.
